There comes a time when certain practices have to change, move with the times. Perhaps there are better or more affordable ways of doing these things. Or maybe new discoveries allow for the ways of old to change, for the betterment of the environment. Both these scenarios are very true for the way plastic is created.
How it is Now, and How it Can Be Done:
As you may know, plastic is created by using certain harmful things, such as crude oil. And plastic manufacturers have used these methods forever. And will continue to do so, unless they are educated that there is another way. A better way of doing it. So rather than using petro chemical processes, what can they turn to? Well, they could use a bio-based plasticizer instead.
What is a Bio Based Plasticizer?!?
Well, bio based plasticizers are used by companies in the creation of biodegradable plastics. What they do is use a blend of certain fatty acids taken from plants, and together with something called isosorbide, get formed into whatever form of plastic is required. Now, isosorbide itself is created by taking the starch called sorbitol and dehydrating it. Together with the fatty acids, things like polyester, curable resins (like epoxy resin) and many other plastics can be created, for a wide variety of different applications.
The Biggest Potential Change:
The sector that has the biggest potential for change is in the water bottle manufacturing sector. Some surprising facts about water bottles:
- 17 million barrels of oil are used PER YEAR to create water bottles.
- On average, Americans alone use 167 bottles per year, but only 38 get recycled.
- The US consumes 1500 water bottles PER SECOND.
These statistics are really eye opening as to the sheer level of volume of water bottles created. If companies were to start using bottles made with POLYSORB ®ID, a very highly pure isosorbide, they could transition to a biodegradable solution instead. So instead of bottles that last thousands of years, in landfills all over the world, and in seas covering the face of the planet, they could use bottles that bio degrade in a green way.
The Greener Way, For the Future:
Things change with time, but now is the time for the practise of creating plastics, using petro chemicals to cease. There is a better way, a clean, green solution that is as cost effective and yields as comparable results as before. So maybe it is time for awareness of these solutions to be increased. Companies have a responsibility to their customers to ensure that the products supplied are created in a humane manor, and that also includes the packaging that they come in. Products created, that are borne out of animal cruelty are unacceptable to pretty much everybody, so why should it not be the same for products created that are cruel to the environment as well? The greater the awareness, the greater pressure will come on these companies to demand that bio degradable plastics come from their suppliers.
